Questions

To be qualified to drive a HGV or bus you must pass your module 3b on-road driving test. This test includes vehicle safety questions and an hour of practical road driving. It must be taken in the same class of vehicle that you passed the part 3a in, so if you took your 3a in a category CE articulated lorry, then the part 3b must also be in an a category CE vehicle.

The questions that you can be asked will depend on whether your vehicle has a trailer. You can practice the show me, tell me questions for lorry and bus, and for vehicles with a trailer by clicking the correct link below.

On-Road Test

Once you have passed the driving questions part of the test you will move onto the practical road driving part. This is one hour of on-road driving and it’s designed to test that you can:

  • use the vehicle controls
  • move away at an angle, uphill and downhill
  • do a controlled stop
  • use the mirrors
  • give appropriate signals
  • show awareness and anticipation of other road users’ intentions
  • manage your progress and control your vehicle speed
  • deal with hazards
  • select a safe place to stop

There will also be 10 minutes of independent driving, designed to test your ability to drive safely while making independent decisions. Don’t worry if you make a minor mistake during your test, your examiner will only stop the test if they feel your driving is a danger to other road users. You will pass if you make 12 or fewer driving faults as well as no serious or dangerous faults.

The best way to ensure you will pass is to be well prepared, which meens plenty of practice! Our experienced driving instructors will help you to practice for each element of the test to ensure you’re ready for anything that might happen on your test.
