Module 1a Multiple Choice Test

You can take module 1a and 1b tests in any order, but they must be passed both within 2 years to get your theory test certificate.

Revision and Practice

The more revision and practice you have the easier it will be to pass your multiple choice test. The test is based on three books, these are:

  • The Highway Code
  • Know Your Traffic Signs
  • The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Goods Vehicles or The Official DVSA Guide to Driving Buses and Coaches

The driver training you’ll get from Kim Driver Training will also help you to prepare for your driving theory test. We provide the online revision so you don’t need the books, just use the revision on your phone or tablet to learn the rules. This is handy as you can have a quick revision session whenever you have time!

When you think you’re ready to take the test try a practice theory test. This doesn’t include the same questions from the real test, but they are based on the same topics as the real test. It will boost your confidence and lets you get used to the format of the questions.

The Test

The test is 100 multiple choice questions, an example of the questions is:

You’re approaching a bridge that has no height restriction on it. What’s the minimum height under the bridge?

  1. 3.6m (11ft 10″)
  2. 4.4m (14ft 5″)
  3. 4.8m (16ft)
  4. 5m (16ft 6″)

The correct answer here is option 4, the standard minimum clearance provided over every part of the carriageway of a public highway is 16’6” (5.03m).

All of the questions will give a choice of possible answers. You have 1 hour and 55 minutes to finish the test. Obviously you’re not allowed to take books, notes or your phone into the test.

When you’re answering questions if you’re not sure about one you can flag it to leave it and return later. You can also change your mind about an answer you’ve selected if you want to correct a mistake. When you’re happy that you’ve answered all of the questions as well as you can the test has finished – you don’t have to use all of the time.

The pass mark is 85 out of 100 questions.
