Why Do I Need A Medical?
You can’t qualify to drive a HGV or PCV without having a medical. This is to ensure that anyone in control of a large vehicle is fit to drive.
The doctor that conducts the examination is not the person that has the final say on whether you are fit to drive, this is done by the DVLA. The doctor completes the D4 medical form, and this is sent to the DVLA who will assess the answers and decide if you are fit to drive.
At Kim Driver Training we can arrange the medical for you, we use doctors that specialise in drivers medicals, so they know how to complete the form so that there is no hold up with the application process.
The medical is in two parts:
Interview
This is a chat with the doctor to discuss any existing medical conditions the candidate has, as well as their medical history. At Kim Driver Training, we understand that the medical assessment is not just a procedural formality but a crucial step to ensure your readiness and safety on the road. This is your opportunity to engage openly with the doctor, who is dedicated to understanding your health and its impact on your driving abilities. Remember, being transparent about your medical history not only protects you but also upholds the safety of all road users. Your honesty during the interview lays the foundation for a thorough assessment, giving you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you are fully compliant with the regulations.

Physical Examination
The doctor will check the candidate physically to check blood pressure, sugar levels, vision etc. You don’t need to be super fit, but must be in reasonably good health. This isn’t just a physical check, the doctor will be checking for mental health issues, sleep disorders and any drug or drink problems.
Once you have passed the medical you need to inform the DVLA if you develop any medical condition that could disqualify you from driving in the future. Another medical may be required after reporting a problem before you can drive again. If your licence is suspended as a result of a new condition you can get the licence restored if you return to good health. The medical part of the driving licence isn’t there to punish a driver, just to ensure everyone’s safety on the road.
