What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence, it’s sometimes referred to as a driver qualification card or DQC. This is a qualification you will need to achieve if you’re driving a lorry, bus or coach professionally. You need to carry your CPC card whenever you’re driving for work.
Does everyone that drives a lorry need CPC?
There are exceptions, so it’s worth checking with the DVSA if you’re planning to do anything unusual. The general rule is if you’re being paid to drive a lorry, or if you’re carrying more than 9 passengers and being paid to do so you will need to hold a valid card.
To get your CPC you must pass the initial training which comes in two parts. Module 2 is a case study theory test and Module 4 is a practical test. Once you’ve passed this initial training you can get your CPC card, this will last 5 years. You then need to keep your training up to date by completing 35 hours of training before the 5 year deadline. This continuous training aims to refresh your knowledge. It’s not worth trying to dodge this training, if you’re caught driving without CPC you will get a £1,000 fine! Driving without your card can result in a £50, even if you have the valid qualification.
